Unreal Tournament

Published by GT Interactive Software Corp.
Developed by Epic Games, Inc.
Released 1999
Genre Action

Description :

Unreal Tournament is completely different to Unreal it's now mainly based on multiplayer.

At the beginning, you have to play classic deathmatch rounds. After you have successfully won some of them, a new game mode becomes available, domination. In domination there are about 3 or 4 different areas scattered around the map to be controlled by your team. For a certain amount of seconds you control one area, a point is added to your score. The more areas you control, the faster your team's score rises. When you or the other team reaches a certain score, the game is over. The 3rd mode is called capture the flag, every team has a flag to defend and tries to capture the other team's flag to score a point.

The 4th game mode is probably the most innovative one, it's called assault. These are real missions, like you have to attack an enemy base and destroy something in it. Again, there are two teams, the defenders and the attackers. You have to complete the mission in a certain time, like 5 or 10 minutes. If you were successfull, your team has to defend this time and the other team attacks. But the attacking team now only has as much time as you needed to attack.

All these modes are either playable in single or multiplayer mode. If playing alone, you have a large menu with orders you can give your bots. Also, all weapons were redesigned, and some new ones are added. The game uses Unreal's graphics engine.

Trivia :
  • Unreal Tournament is on the Index of the BPjS in Germany. This occurred on 28.02.2002, over 2 years past release. Games on this index have to be hidden in the stores, and mustn't be advertised in any way anymore, but are still available on request for adults in the stores.
  • The Unreal engine was greatly enhanced (and fixed) before the release of Unreal Tournament. The Unreal engine, in software rendering mode, is one of the only popular commercial 3D engines that supports dithering interpolation at high resolutions for very smooth texture appearance.
  • The Dreamcast version does not have assault mode as all the maps save one were too large to fit in Dreamcast's memory. It is replaced in single-player by a new challenge mode, which is a series of one-on-one battles.

Quake III: Arena

Published by Activision, Inc.
Developed by id Software, Inc.
Released 1999
Genre Action

Description :

Quake returns for its third action fest, however on this occasion the emphasis is on multiplayer and team gameplay over the series' single player roots.

The games storyline will take you through a number of 1on1 and team based challenges, slowly ranking upwards in difficulty, as the character of your choosing. As usual, there are a number of weapons (from the trusty shotgun to the BFG, and everything in-between) that will aid you in battle, along with power-ups and armour which all comes in handy to keep you alive as long as possible.

Online multiplayer is where Quake III: Arena is at. You'll get the chance to battle your friends in a range of different game modes, including Deatmatch, Team Deathmatch, 1 Flag Capture The Flag, Capture The Flag and Possession. Again, the emphasis in most of the game modes is in team play, whether it be holding off the opposition as your teammate collects and scores the flag, or protecting you and your team as you horde the skull over time.

Requirements :

Min.CPU PIII
Min.OS Win 98
Min.RAM 128MB
Min.DirectX 7.0
CD ROM Speed 4X
Keyboard
Mouse

  • nVIDIA GeForce 256
  • Matrox G200 & G400
  • Intel i740

  • Trivia :
    • While this game was in development, it was referred to as Trinity. This was an obvious reference that it was using the third and possibly final Quake engine

    • The game contains a reference to a popular online comic called User Friendly (www.userfriendly.org). When playing on q3dm19, pick up the fly power-up from the top of the level and fly all the way down until you’re below the final platform. Look up at the central floor and you’ll see an image of the Dust Puppy, as featured in the comic.
    • A downloadable add-on map pack is available on many Quake 3 sites on the 'net, which contains all the maps from the Dreamcast release of the game. This add-on pack allows players of the windows/linux version to play on servers with Dreamcast players. This makes Quake 3 one of the first games to support transparent Internet play between a game console and the PC!

    • "Quake III Arena" presents some of the heroes from previous Id games as playable skins, including the Space Marine from "Doom", the marine from "Quake", and a few of the different marines from "Quake II". All of these models and skins have both male and female counterparts, and different color variations.
    • id Software released a technology demo of the game, called Q3Test, in early 1999. In the following five days, 2 million Quake 3 Test internet games were started worldwide. That works out to around 4 games every second.
    • 50,000 copies of the game were sold within the first 3 days of its release.

    SWAT 3:Close Quarters Battle

    Published by Sierra On-Line, Inc.
    Developed by Sierra On-Line, Inc.
    Released 1999
    Genre Action, Simulation, Strategy

    Description :

2005. After many negotiations, the United Nations Nuclear Abolishment Treaty is about to be signed in L.A., celebrating what's to be named the "Global Peace Day". However, the joyous occasion is also seen by domestic and international terrorists as a soapbox for their demands, and it's up to SWAT to keep everything going as planned. As if terrorist threats are not enough, two portable nuclear demolition devices are for sale... in the L.A. area.

A tactical FPS, the player is in control of a five man strike team, and it's up to him to guide the other two-man teams to complete each mission, for a total of 16, ranging from dangerous arrests, hostage rescue, VIP escort to track and disarm bombs, while visiting landmarks of the city such as the City Hall or the Convention Center (where the E3 takes place). To help the strike team, each officer has one of four standard-issue weapons to choose from, a sidearm and utilities such as glowsticks, C2 door breaching charges, CS gas, flashbangs and the always useful optiwand, to know what's after the corner and the Leatherman tool, to disable electronic devices and unlock doors.

    Requirements :

    Min.CPU PIII
    Min.OS Win 98
    Min.RAM 128MB
    Min.DirectX 8.0
    CDROM Speed 4X

    Trivia :
    • One of the missions in this game includes what may be a reference to the old Police Quest series which spawned the SWAT series. In the mission where you retake a bank from terrorists holding bank employees hostage, one of the women being held captive is listed in the mission briefing as Marie Bonds, well known to Police Quest fans as the wife of protagonist Sonny Bonds.

To avoid getting shot when peeking past an obstacle, use your camera to look before moving in for the kill.

    Hint: AI officer killed:
Play the game in co-op mode. If you have a window of your teammates, the AI Officer you have in the window will be killed first.
