Need For Speed : Carbon

Published by EA
Developed by EA Black Box
Released 2006
Genre Racing

Description :

The 2006 game in the Need for Speed series is an evolution of the gameplay introduced in the previous games. The career mode offers complete freedom in a city through a story mode supported by FMV cutscenes, as featured in NFS Most Wanted, but now also set in the Carbon Canyon, where racers duel for territory in the city below. There still are many police pursuits. At the same time, the focus on tuning and sculpting you car remains, as introduced in NFS Underground. As you win money with races, you can visit garages and car lots to make improvements to your vehicle.

Enhancements are still unlocked gradually, but the cars have now been divided over different tiers. There are about 40 cars to unlock. Many of them have featured in previous installments, but there is a new selection and this year's edition introduces powerful muscle cars such as the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger. Other features include the possibility to build your own crew, more detailed sculpting features, drifting races (introduced in NFS:U and replaced by drag races in NFS:MW) and the new car classes. The PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions offer online multiplayer, missing from the PS2, GC and Xbox releases. Up to eight players can race together, in the Pursuit Tag or Pursuit Knockout modes, with a few variations. Pursuit Tag is a race of one civilian car against cop cars. To become the civilian car, you have to tag it and then try to fend off the cops as long as possible until you are tagged again by other players. In Pursuit Knockout everyone starts as a civilian car, but the last one at the end of the first lap becomes a cop and needs to cause as much damage as possible to the other speeders. Another mode allows you to drive cooperatively (up to four players) in a single race.

The city and the surroundings in the career mode have been divided into different territories, controlled by gangs. You are either invited or challenged to race in the sections and claim them as your own. To do so, you have to impress the gang leader by winning races until he challenges you for a duel - first in the city, then over the narrow roads of Carbon Canyon. Scores are based on proximity. You need to follow the boss in the first race, and he is in pursuit in the second one. There are 4 boss duels in total.

The crew feature, with room for up to 6 cars, allows you to assign three roles to racers: drafters, scouts and blockers. These are supporting characters you can hire to help you win races. Drafters leave behind a coloured trail that makes it easier to find the way, scouts discover hidden shortcuts, and blockers try to cause mayhem to slow your opponents down. If you hire a scout, you get access to the new AutoSculpt feature. It enables you to modify the height of every part of your car through sliders, solely visual effect. You can also buy full body kits.

Extra money:
Have a saved game file from Need for Speed: Most Wanted on your hard drive for a $10,000 bonus when you start career mode.

Hint: Easier Speedtrap races:
Activate your Blocker/Brawler before the race. While racing and you are coming up to a speed trap, stop your Blocker/Brawler. This will crash the other car(s), and drastically slow down their time. Remember that the peak Blocker/Brawler moment is just before the speed trap.

Hint: Easy wins:
In races where crew members are used, used a scout (Yumi if possible). If you do not win the race, your scout will.

When in Career mode, choose the Exotic class. When you get to the Stacked Deck level, get a Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Once this happens, Neville, Colin, and Nikki will still have exotic cars. Choose one of them and do any race where you can use your wingman. You should have easy win.

Hint: Easy money:
Once you have completed career mode, set Samson as your wingman with Neville also in your crew. You can repeat any races you have already completed in which a wingman is used and recieve $750 for each race completed instead of the $500 without. This can also be used on first time races for maximum cash output.

Hint: Collectors edition cars:
Complete the following events in the Challenge Series to unlock the corresponding car.

Aston Martin DB9 (Exotic): Defeat Wolf in Boss Battle mode.
Dodge Charger RT Classic (Muscle): Defeat the 21st Muscle Car Gang.
Jaguar XK 2007 (Exotic): Complete all three Turf War races.
Mazda RX7 (Tuner): Defeat Kenji in Boss Battle mode.
Nissan 240SX (Tuner): Complete all three Checkpoint challenges.
Hint: Eleanor (Gone In 60 Seconds) custom car:
This is the exact car from Gone In 60 Seconds. Start a Muscle Car Career mode. After you conquer the first three territories (Kempton, Downtown, and Fortuna), a new territory is unlocked. In this territory, win two races in the area to the far left (Silverton) to unlock the "67' Shelby GT 500". After you obtain the car for $108,000, return to your safe house and select "Customization". Then, choose "Aftermarket".

The easiest way to break 1 million in Career mode is to start a Muscle career. Race two races in order to unlock the car lot. Then, go to your challenge series and unlock the Nissan 240 (last set of checkpoint challenges). Buy the car in your career. It is possible to complete the entire game with this car. It is important to start as a muscle career so that you unlock Sampson first. Race the entire game with Sampson set as active and Neville in your crew. You can break 1 million with about ten races left over.

Hint: Avoid flipping:
When you are about to flip, hit the nitrous. It will stabilize your car and you will not flip.

Hint: Free performance parts:
Go into "My Crew" then choose a crew member. Select the "View Car" option. Then, customize it. You can paint it whatever color desired, and because your crew members cars are not tuned you can buy them performance parts for free.

Need For Speed : Most Wanted

Published by EA, Inc.
Developed by EA Canada
Released 2005
Genre Racing

Description :

Need for Speed Most Wanted is in fact a cross between the Underground and the Hot Pursuit spin-offs. The player must gain notoriety by racing in the streets and attracting the attention of the cops in order to ascend in the Black List of illegal racers. In the end he must face no.1, Razor who tricked him out of his own car and used it to get to the top.

Many racing modes are carried on from NFSU2 with the addition of "Milestones", special events where the driver must evade capture and/or disable police cars by bringing down Pursuit Breakers, specially marked buildings such as gas stations and water towers. For each one of the 15 Blacklisted opponents, the player must win a specific number of events from each of the two main types and gain enough notoriety in the process. The player can invest bet money to buy new cars or improve his existing one's looks and performance so that he remains competitive.

In Most Wanted, Josie Maran replaces Brooke Burke as the racer girl. The plot is furthered through use of FMV video with live actors and digital sets, which has been heavily enhanced so that it looks quite real.

Trivia :
  • When an issue with stuttering sound in the Windows version was reported on the EA forums, the official statement was that EA had no time and resources to work on a patch for it. This was less than 5 months after the release.
  • There is an unofficial patch on various fansites that enables all cars and races which are normally available only in NFS: Most Wanted Black Edition.
  • The EA Belgium office planned a little stunt on 24th November 2005, the launch day. They intended to give away free copies in the morning's traffic bottlenecks, but that didn't go through eventually.

All upgrades:
After completing the game, start a new file. Load the new file after the introduction sequence. Save the game. Without shutting down the game, load the file that you won the game with and go into the car selection screen. Select a car as usual, then save the game. Again, without shutting down the game, load the new file. All Performance, Visual and Parts upgrades will be unlocked in that game. All the Blacklist racers in the new file will have the stamp across them that reads "Defeated". You can still race them and get through the game normally, but you must drive to the Blacklist challenge location to race Sonny, Taz, Vic, etc. You can no longer initiate the blacklist races from the menu.

Hint: Challenge series:
After completing career mode there will still be some cars that are locked. In order to unlock them you must go to the main menu and select the "Challenge Series" option. After winning all the challenges, those cars will be unlocked. Note: At first there will be two or three challenges unlocked from 69 challenge. In order to access the locked challenges you must win the available challenges.

Hint: Better times:
On Heritage and Omega, to get through the curves do no use the shortcuts. It will only slow you down. Just take the turns and it will save you some time. It can help you build up some speed for the rest of the track.

Hint: Nitrous and grip:
Hitting nitrous torques the chassis back, giving the rear tires immensely more weight under the new acceleration. The end effect is that you will go straight. If you find your tail sliding out or are about to spin out of control, hit your nitrous. You will be surprised at how fast you will get straight again. This is a great trick in combination with Speedbreaker. With the correct timing, there is no corner you cannot take at any speed.

Hint: Getting the most money from selling your car:
When in your safe house and you sell a car, you will only get half of its list value. However, there is a loophole that works well for pink slips that you have won and no longer want. Take your car to the shop. Go to the parts area. Go into the body kit, spoiler, hood, rims, and roof air areas and set everything to stock. When you check out, you will see anywhere from $1,000 to $18,000, depending on what pink slip car you are stripping. Do not try this with performance parts. The shop charges you money for downgrading. Once you have stripped your car of all accessories, leave. Then, go to your safe house. Sell the car, and you will have made a lot of money on the side. Do this every time you intend to sell any car.

Hint: Easy upgrades:
Before you can do anything, you must win the Burger King Challenge. When you win it, you will unlock all unique parts (also called Junkman parts). Get any car and put all the parts except performance. Once you have your car the way you desire, go to the performance shop. Max out your car. Then, put the Junkman parts on. Max out your car again. Then put on the Junkman parts again. Your car should be fully upgraded.

Hint: Get strikes off your car:
If you get busted in a pursuit, turn off the game before saving it. When the game is played again the strike will be gone. Note: This will not work if you can only get one more strike.

Hint: Blacklist cars:
If you win the pinkslips to a Blacklist car, you may want to use the Blacklist car as your own and make the necessary upgrades to performance, as most of the upgrades will have been already made by the Blacklist owner. You do not need to spend too much money to increase the performance, handling, etc. Sometimes these cars will have upgrades that have not been unlocked yet, but most of these are usually visual. Only do this if the vehicle you have won has better attributes than the one you are currently driving in its standard mode. You can check this out in the car shop. Keep about three to five good quick cars in your safehouse.

Hint: Car test:
If you are unsure which car is the best to use when upgraded, you can upgrade all the cars that are unlocked for free in the main menu.-Go to "My Cars", choose a car that is available, and upgrade it with the parts that are available. By doing this, you will not waste all your money in career mode.

Hint: Better car performance:
After getting your car upgraded with engines, suspension, brakes, etc., go to "Performance Tuning". For better handling for the Lamborghini, Porsche, Corvette, and Viper, set the "Height" of you car to "-1". If you need more gripping power either take the "Height" to "-2" or set the "Aerodynamics" to "+1". If you go overboard with the performance tuning options (anything past "+3" or "-3"), the car will actually handle worse.

Hint: Avoiding SUVs:
Have a good car and a good Nitro booster. Whenever you see an SUV coming at you, hit your nitrous and ram him head on. He should fly backward and explode, giving you $10,000.

Need For Speed III : Hot Pursuit

Published by EA, Inc.
Developed by EA, Inc.
Released 1998
Genre Racing

Description :

In the third major installment of Electronic Arts' Arcade racing series, there are several modes of play available. You have the standard race, with one big difference - now there are traffic cops out to ticket you for your excessive speed. Alternatively, you can take your turn with the radar gun and attempt to pull over speeding computer or human racers.

Returning to the flavour of the original Need for Speed, this adds a new Pursuit mode, where you must out run the cops through fast, open area tracks, while also out-lasting the rest of the pack. Another new mode is knockout, where you race through all the tracks, and whoever is last after each race is knocked out. The winner is, of course, the one that lasts the distance.

As for the cars; there are the Ferrari 550 Maranello, Ferrari 355 F1 Spider, Italdesign Scighera, Lamborghini Diablo SV, Lamborghini Countach, Jaguar XJR-15, Jaguar XK8, Aston Martin DB7, '98 Corvette C5, Mercedes SL600 and the Mercedes CLK GTR.

Triva :

  • Hidden on the top of the Summit track is a Yeti like creature. It is located one corner before the ski-lodge, on the right, near the sign that indicates you're approaching a hairpin turn to the left. The front of your car will have to face the wall of snow next to the track if you want to see it (select high-cam).
  • The tool to create the cars in the game are actually included on the CD. This lead to a huge number of fan-created add-on cars, some with impossible performance levels.
  • Four new cars, made by Electronic Arts, could be downloaded from the official website. These cars are: the Jaguar XKR, the Lister Storm, the Spectre R42 and the Ferrari 456M GT.
  • In the credits section of the options menu you can view a (phony) driver's license with picture and personal info for each of the developers. There are also some 360 degree panorama shots showing several groups of developers.
  • The Atlantica track has its own Electronic Arts office. If the cops follow in the proximity of that office you will, for example, hear them say: " Unit 15 in pursuit of a yellow Diablo near the EA building, he's doing more than 120!"

Need For Speed : Hot Pursuit 2

Published by EA, Inc.
Developed by Black Box Games
Released 2002
Genre Racing/Driving

Description :

The Need for Speed series returns, this time reverting back to the 'chase' arcade experience instead of a racing simulation. Top speed racing is the name of the game, where you must outchase not just the opposing drivers, but the cops.

Choose from a selection of today's (and yesterday's) top sports cars, including the Ferrari F50, Porsche 911 and a range from the likes of Ford, Corvette, BMW, Lotus, Mercedes, Aston Martin, the McLaren F1 and a lot more.

The competitive race mode allows you to take on other drivers and beat them to the line. A selection of tracks allows you to not only dodge incoming traffic, but perform deadly jumps and stunts to receive points. These points, combined with the points recieved from your finishing position, can unlock new cars and tracks.

The Hot Pursuit mode combines all the major elements of the competitive mode with the chance to out run the cops. They will throw everything at you to try and stop you, including running you off the road, setting up road blocks and unleashing an attack helicopter equiped with missiles. Three busts by the cops ends the race.
