TrackMania Nations Electonic Sports World Cup

Developed by Nadeo
Released 2006
Genre Racing

Description :

Trackmania Nations ESWC is a free edition in the TrackMania series, specifically developed for tournament play. It was used in the 2006 edition of the Electronic Sports World Cup (2006), held from 27th June to 2nd July 2006 in Paris - Bercy, for a grand total of $40,000. The game is based on Track Mania Sunrise and introduces a new vehicle, and the stadium as a new environment, where all races are held.

TrackMania is a modern version of Stunts, using basic controls and offering racing courses with tricky sections including loops, corkscrews, turbo blocks and huge jumps that require technical skill. In the single player mode, you can practice on 90 tracks, divided over three skills levels. Each race is associated with three time standards to be met to win a bronze, silver or gold medal. There is also a hot-seat multiplayer option where up to eight players can race against the time or with only one try.

In the online mode, you have to register an online account and select your nation. Each car has a custom theme per country, but you can also create a unique look in the paint shop. There are three modes in online multiplayer games, with support for up to 20 players. In Round, you race against all other players with only one try, and you receive points based on the final standings. The same course is played until someone has 30 points. If you crash early, you can track other players in the spectator mode. Other vehicles are visible on the screen, but cannot be hit and they cannot slow you down. Time Attack is similar, but with an unlimited amount of tries. In Team, players race in teams and the points are calculated as the sum of the individual rankings. During online play, there are detailed rankings based on your efforts. There is a ladder with an overview of all players, but also a global ranking with all the nations.

The game comes with an in-game server browser, colored nicknames, a chat function, buddy lists, extensive admin options for server owners, and commands for launching gameplay votes. New tracks can be created in the included graphical editor, and shared with other players. The track editor also features a media tracker, to add text, intros, special effects, and sound and camera movement to your creations. You can design new challenges and exchange replays of your best times. Replays can be exported to avi if you want to share your time with someone who does not have the game. If you own Track Mania Original or TrackMania Sunrise (eXtreme) , you can attach your serial number to your online account. This enables P2P, allowing other registered players to view your custom-painted car, and vice versa.

OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast

Published by SEGA Eurpoe Ltd.
Developed by Sumo Digital Ltd.
Released 2006
Genre Racing

Description :

Like its predecessors, OutRun 2006 is an old-school arcade racer, which means that your cars don't have realistic physics, don't get damaged and have insanely fast speed.

Since this title is officially licensed by Ferrari, you drive with 15 original models from the DINO 246 GTS over the F430 to the all-new Enzo Ferrari. The heart of the game is the Coast 2 Coast mode in which you on race against up to 5 AI players on 15 US themed tracks. In addition you have to impress different girlfriends. She tells you what she wants to see (a hard slide around a curve or a close take-over for example) and you have to perform it to win her heart.

There are 3 other game modes available in singleplayer: OutRun, Time Attack and OutRun2SP. In OutRun2SP you get access to 15 arcade tracks from the original OutRun 2. In OutRun however you need to drive your girlfriend through various checkpoints to the goal before the timer hits zero. In Time Attack you just have to beat the highscore of the current track. You can either race against the clock or against ghost cars.

In every mode you get OutRun miles after the race. These are the currency of the game and are needed to unlock new cars, upgrades and additional music-stations.

If you feel alone, even with your virtual girlfriend in the car, you can race online against 5 other players.

Xpand Rally

Published by Zeta Multimedia S.A
Developed by Techland
Released 2004
Genre Racing

Description :

Xpand Rally puts you behind the wheel of a tuned-up WRC machine in over seventy races in five sceneries, using a modified version of the Chrome engine with fully movable obstacles, dynamic day time and weather changes, full collisions simulation and a complex car damage system. The driver can even sustain leg injuries and concussions. There is much more freedom than in other rally games. In the freestyle mode, for example, there are no invisible borders, you can compete off-road with no restrictions to tracks.

Aside from the traditional race, you can build-up a rally career, similar to NFS Underground where you work your way up as a rookie. You need to spend your money wisely to take care off repairs and tune your car with over 800 parts. Xpand Rally does not have an official rally license, but includes 35 sports cars over 8 divisions, with some funky models such as tiny coopers or terrain vehicles. There are two driving modes: arcade and simulation with different damage systems and steering models.

ChromEd, a full game editor loaded with tutorial and templates, has been attached to the game. You can edit existing tracks or create new ones and even import your own car designs straight from 3D Studio MAX.

Requirements :

Min.CPU PIII
Min.OS Win 98
Min.RAM 256MB
Min.DirectX 9.0b
CDROM Speed 4X

Trivia :
  • For a rather low-budget title, the game uses extensive copy protection: an installation serial, an activation code and additional protection with StarForce 3.04.049.001.
  • On November 26, 2004, a set of custom tracks was released. They were designed by game modders and approved by the Techland compatibility test. The set includes a dirty track and two destruction derby style tracks.

  • On December 22, 2004, a complete ChromEd user guide was published. It contains complete information on level creation philosophy and specific editor tools. The tutorial is supplemented with a video material that shows the subsequent steps of track creation with comments from one of the Xpand Rally tracks developer.

Midnight Club II

Published by Rockstar Games, Inc.
Developed by Angel Studios
Released 2003
Genre Action, Racing

Description :

On the streets at night, anything can happen. And if you have a car that can race the distance, there's money involved too.

This is the premise behind Midnight Club II, in which you must work your way up the ranks of illegal street racing by challenging and defeating the best over three cities.

Each race occurs in a different area of the city, and all you have to do to get started is flash your lights at the person you wish to drag. Then follow the map for the track route and go hell for leather. Further along, shortcuts will also come into play, giving you an advantage in getting to the finish first.

Each race you win racks up cash, which goes towards new and much faster cars for the more difficult challenges. You'll also get the chance to go two wheels with a selection of highly mobile bikes.

Multiplayer modes include the usual all-on-all race mode, and capture the flag, in which you must race to the opposing flag somewhere in the city and return it to your destination.

Hint: Losing the police:
When side by side with a police car, find a tree or pole ahead that is on the side nearest to the police car. Push the police car into the tree or pole.

When a police car is directly behind you, find a tree or pole ahead. Drive directly toward it and when near, take a sharp turn away from it. The police car will smash into the tree or pole.

Hint: Two-wheel driving:
This move is much more effective if you pop up on the wheels early, then hold the position (hold [Weight Transfer]) and steer your car. If you wait until you are about to hit someone, it will not be as easy to see where you should go.

Hint: Burnouts:
With some of the cars, you can charge up the burnout faster by revving up the engine, then pressing [Handbrake]. It depends on the car, but some will work better this way.

Hint: Spin-out competitors:
As you approach another car from behind, try to line up the front half of your car with the back end of the other car. As you touch the back end, turn sharply toward the other car. If done correctly, you can make them swerve into a wall or even do a 180 and be left behind in the dust.

Hint: Motorcycle turns:
If you are making a sharp turn, try to make your wheels hit the wall/building. If you use the handbrake or regular brake, you can turn the bike sideways and let your wheels hit instead of hitting it head-on. This allows you to stay on the bike and keep going. You can also still steer while popping a wheelie. After you pull back, keep holding [Weight Transfer] (but stop pulling back) and use the steering to move while gaining speed. The view is a little difficult, but you can get a lot of speed this way.

Hint: Tokyo: Big jump:
Select cruise mode and follow your way through the glass rectangle about 50 meters in front of you. Drive straight until you get to the road up to the freeway. Go up onto the freeway and stay on the right-hand side. Take the first turnoff on the right. Follow that until it goes back down on the street. You should be next to a large river. Follow that river road until you reach a massive jump. You can use it and land on the other side of the river. Note: It is best to get a run up from down that small street with one of the best cars with some nitro.

Hint: Easy wins in Capture The Flag mode:
Get the item, stop, and allow one of your opponents to get the flag. Then, go all the way to the finish line and stay there. When your opponent is racing down to the finish line, quickly use stop on his or her car. While stuck there, ram into their car, get the flag, and bring it to the finish line. Note: This trick may not work if not executed properly. Also. to avoid your opponent's attacks, get a shield or stealth.

Hint: Easy wins in Circuit races:
Enable the "Nitrous" and "Guns and rockets" codes. Use a motorcycle of your choice. At the beginning of the race, use the "Burnout" strategy and face a car in front of you. You can either use the machine gun to blow it up or use the rockets to move them out of your way. If they get past you in any part of the race, fire the machine gun and steer and accelerate and fire rockets to knock them off course.

Hint: Last Man Standing, The Final Race:
After you have completed the game and have become the Tokyo champion, another message appears. It reads "The World Champion Of Illegal Street Racing". However, you are not really the champion until you defeta Shave. He has all Velocis and they have five nitros. The best way to defeat him is to enable the "All cars" code. Red and yellow Velocis will attempt to run you off the road.

Hint: Repair damage and restore nitro:
When cruising in in career mode with damage and no nitro, find a racer and flash your lights at him. Do not follow him. Instead, either stay where you are or drive in the opposite direction. Ignore the countdown. Once out of time, your damage and nitro will be as if you just started the level.
